Hospital to offer Two New Classes

If falling or stress reduction is a concern you face, you may want to consider one of the two new classes being offered by the Rehabilitation Department of Parmer Medical Center. "Fall Prevention" is a two session course that will provide information on balance and safety in your environment. Participants will learn fall prevention, how to fall if a fall is inevitable and what to do once you fall. Attendees will learn exercises to improve strength, flexibility and balance as well as changes to reduce fall risks at home. Classes will be held on Tuesdays September 28th and October 5th from 9:30 to 11:30.

The other course being offered is "Tai Chi". According to the website of the Mayo Clinic, Tai Chi is sometimes described as “mediation in motion” because it promotes serenity through gentle movement – connecting the mind and body. Although originally developed in ancient China for self defense, Tai Chi evolved into a graceful form of exercise that’s now used for stress reduction and for improving balance and sleep quality.

Anyone can practice Tai Chi regardless of age or physical ability. It emphasizes technique over strength and is low impact. It may be especially suitable if you’re an older adult who otherwise may not exercise. Classes start September 28th and will be offered twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays at noon.

To sign up for either class or to get more information, call Dr. Nimfa Martin at 806 250-2754, ext. 146.
