Protect yourself with proper hand washing
Parmer Medical Center plans to bring you a series of short articles to help everyone protect themselves from the spread of respiratory infections and viruses such as the flu, colds, strep throat and Ebola. This week we will be focusing on hand washing.
Clean hands are the single most important factor in preventing the spread of infections and viruses. You have probably observed individuals just run their hands under the water, dry their hands and consider themselves done. This will not protect anyone from the spread of illnesses. In order for hand washing to be truly effective in the spread of illnesses, it needs to be done correctly. Hands should be wet down with water and enough soap applied to cover all hand surfaces. All surfaces of the hand should them be rubbed together for at least 20 seconds, rinsed with water, dried with a single use towel and the water turned off with the towel. The entire process should take a total of 40 to 60 seconds. Please look at the diagrams located (below) to see the proper hand washing techniques endorsed by the World Health Organization.
If everyone in your household uses proper hand washing techniques and gets their flu shot, you have taken great strides to prevent the spread of illness and keeping your household healthy.
